6 jobs you can do with a laboratory operations qualification

Studying laboratory operations can lead you to work in laboratories in a variety of fields, including but not limited to construction materials testing (CMT), mining, environmental testing, school and quality assurance.

You will gain comprehensive skills, technical knowledge and lab techniques that reflect the industry standard. Whatever field you choose, a qualification in laboratory operations pathway will help you prepare for it.

Here are a few examples of where studying lab can take you:

1. Lab assistants work with laboratory personnel during lab tests and experiments and assist with sample weighing, preparation and analysis. They follow quality control requirements and avoid contamination.

2. Environmental lab technicians specialise in collecting and analysing water, air and/or soil samples depending on the company they work for. They adhere to health and safety regulations and procedures, prepare laboratory tests, maintain equipment, undertake product sampling, testing and record as required to NATA standards.

3. Food lab technicians test and examine the physical and chemical properties of food from ‘farm to fork’ to ensure the taste, quality and texture of the products are all up to scratch. They can collect and prepare samples, test food and food additives, analyse chemical properties and determine whether ingredients, additives, composition and the finished product meet regulations.

4. Medical lab technicians perform medical laboratory tests to assist medical practitioners on the interpretation of tests and methods for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. They examine and analyse samples, perform microscopic examinations and maintain laboratory quality assurance and safety standards.

5. CMT technicians can be found in the lab and the field. They perform a range of different tests on materials such as soil, aggregates, concrete, clay and asphalt. CMT technicians produce clear and concise field and lab reports that support construction requirements. They undertake routine quality assurance checks and calibrations, ensuring all equipment is maintained.

6. Lab supervisors/managers oversee all laboratory personnel and manage the day-to-day operations. They will lead the team to successfully achieve the outcomes of the lab. They will have experience in laboratory information management systems, NATA and ISO quality management requirements, processes and procedures.

By studying at LTT, you will experience training in our simulated laboratory and learn from industry expert Trainer/Assessors who'll provide you with the best opportunity to succeed.
