Rapid Antigen Screening Training

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has released updated guidance on the use of rapid antigen tests in Australia. To ensure they are appropriately used and the results interpreted correctly, the tests can currently only be legally supplied under specific conditions.

Nominated health practitioners who will be performing rapid antigen point of care tests (PoCTs) needs to be trained in the correct use of the device (including specimen collection) and interpretation of results. This training needs to be undertaken prior to commencement of any testing.

Training must include but not be limited to the following areas: sample collection, procedures for the safe performance of tests and accurate interpretation of results, confidentiality of patient and client information, workplace health and safety and infection control protocols and information on administering a test and delivering a test result.

NSW Health recently introduced new restrictions around workplaces and authorised workers from the local government areas (LGAs) of concern. Authorised workers who work outside of their LGA of concern are only permitted to work if rapid antigen testing is implemented at their worksite or they have had their first vaccination dose by 30 August. The WA government have also introduced rapid antigen COVID-19 testing for truck drivers at border crossings.

As Australia’s leading pathology collection and laboratory operations registered training organisation, LTT is actively delivering the nationally recognised units of competency that make up the COVID-19 Collection skill set. In response to the demand for quality assured training, LTT has now commenced rapid antigen screening training delivery. LTT can offer COVID-19 collection combined with rapid antigen screening training in line with the new TGA guidance, to allow employers to meet urgent COVID-19 specific industry needs. LTT has expert trainers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, allowing for local delivery Australia wide.

LTT is also currently seeking government funding support for employers to put relevant employees through training and ensure business operations are able to continue while infection risk is minimised, and business upholds TGA guidance and to meet mandatory stipulations for specific jurisdictions.

Recently Celia Hammond, MP Member for Curtin, Western Australia, spoke in Parliament about LTT and Clinipath Pathology’s training relationship, read the transcript or watch the video below.
