What You'll Cover
Day 1 - Foundations
Refresh your knowledge of:
- Infection control, hand hygiene and PPE
- Clinical risks and safety
- Client identification, consent and confidentiality
- Tubes, additives and common blood tests
- Equipment and needle selection
- Anatomy, vein selection and palpation
- Tourniquet use and client positioning
- Managing risks such as syncope, seizures and bleeding
- Simulated practice using skin pads and manikins
- One live bleed by the end of the day!
Day 2 - Process + Practical
Put the full process together, from start to finish:
- Preparing and explaining the procedure
- Client questioning and pre-test requirements
- Equipment and order of draw
- Vein selection and site preparation
- Needle insertion and blood collection
- Tube handling and specimen integrity
- Labelling and documentation
- Post-venepuncture care
- Troubleshooting and specimen rejection
- Live venepuncture practice!
