Getting Started

Getting started with LTT is straightforward. You’ll need a device with internet access (laptop recommended), basic computer skills, and the ability to save and locate files. We recommend having Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office installed along with Google Chrome web browser. If you don’t have access to a computer at home, free WiFi and computer labs are available at all our training centres, plus public library facilities across Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney offer free computer and internet access.

For optimal learning experience, we recommend using a laptop or desktop computer rather than a tablet or smartphone.

Software Requirements:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Google Chrome

Please ensure you’re familiar with your device and comfortable using it before commencing your studies.

We understand that not everyone has access to technology at home, and we’re here to help. Free WiFi is available at all our training centres and most public libraries throughout Australia.

Location-Specific Computer Access:

Brisbane students: Book our computer lab when not in use by scheduled classes, or reserve computers at Brisbane City Council library branches across the city.

Perth students: Use our computer lab when available, or reserve computers at all City of Swan library branches throughout the region.

Sydney students: Self-serve computers are available at all City of Sydney library branches for your study needs.

Our student support team can help you plan a study schedule around available facilities. Contact us on 1300 588 588 or email info@www.ltt.edu.au to discuss your options.

Courses & Learning

Each LTT course is designed in close collaboration with industry partners to ensure you’re gaining the most current, job-ready skills employers are actively seeking. Our structured programs combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experience, preparing you for real-world roles in healthcare, pathology, and laboratory environments.

Your training will include:

  • Self-paced eLearning modules you can complete flexibly around your schedule
  • Live training sessions led by experienced industry professionals
  • Practical demonstrations and hands-on skill development
  • Interactive activities and scenario-based learning
  • Work placements in clinical facilities (for eligible courses like Certificate III in Pathology Collection)

Your dedicated trainer will guide you through each unit of competency, with comprehensive resources available 24/7 through our online learning platform.

Work placement requirements vary depending on your qualification. For students enrolled in the Certificate III in Pathology Collection (HLT37215), work placement in an accredited pathology collection facility is mandatory and cannot be waived. This hands-on clinical experience is essential for developing competency in blood collection techniques, specimen handling, infection control procedures, and professional patient communication—all critical skills for employment as a qualified pathology collector.

For other courses offered by LTT, placement opportunities may be available as optional components or integrated differently. Check your specific course page for detailed placement requirements, or contact our enrolment team on 1300 588 588 for clarification.

All students must comply with relevant state government health regulations regarding vaccinations applicable during their vocational training period.

Critical Requirements for Certificate III in Pathology Collection Students:

Because work placement is mandatory for this qualification, you must provide documented evidence of specific vaccinations and immunity status before entering clinical pathology facilities. Requirements include immunity evidence for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis B, pertussis (whooping cough), and current influenza vaccination. You’ll also need tuberculosis screening and potentially COVID-19 vaccination depending on facility policies.

Important timeline alert: Some vaccinations require multiple doses spread over several weeks or months (for example, hepatitis B typically requires three doses over six months). To avoid frustrating delays in securing your work placement, we strongly urge students to book a GP appointment immediately after enrolment to commence any outstanding vaccinations. Students unable to complete mandatory work placement due to incomplete vaccination requirements cannot be issued the full qualification—you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment for units of competency successfully completed instead.

Work placement is your opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real clinical environment under professional supervision. You’ll be paired with an experienced phlebotomist who will mentor you throughout your placement journey.

What to expect during placement:

  • Comprehensive workplace induction covering facility-specific protocols
  • Adherence to host employer’s policies on confidentiality, work health and safety, clinical practice, hand hygiene, and infection control
  • Observation of experienced pathology collectors in action
  • Hands-on practice collecting and labelling pathology specimens (blood via venepuncture, plus urine, faeces, saliva, and other biological samples)
  • Communication with diverse patients in various clinical situations
  • Providing accurate information to patients about specimen collection procedures
  • Preparing, processing, and delivering samples within critical timeframes
  • Recording detailed, accurate procedure notes and documentation
  • Extended standing periods as required for clinical duties

Professional conduct expectations:

We strongly encourage students to approach work placement as an extended job interview. Many pathology providers actively recruit new staff from their pool of placement students, so this is your chance to make a lasting professional impression. Your punctuality, personal presentation, communication skills, clinical competency, and overall professionalism will all be observed by potential employers.

Students must comply with LTT’s Student Code of Conduct and all host employer policies throughout placement. Failure to meet conduct expectations may result in immediate removal from placement and a Statement of Attainment being issued rather than your full qualification. Access our full Student Code of Conduct at www.ltt.edu.au/policies-student-documents.

A note on personal hygiene in clinical settings:

Pathology collection requires you to work in close physical proximity with patients, including individuals who may be hyper-sensitive to smells due to medical conditions, treatments like chemotherapy, or pregnancy. In consideration of these vulnerable patients, please be especially mindful of personal hygiene during all placement shifts. Many students find it helpful to bring a small bottle of mouthwash to freshen breath after eating and a roll-on deodorant to reapply midway through longer shifts. If you choose to wear perfume, cologne, or scented body products, apply very sparingly and avoid strong fragrances entirely, as these can trigger allergic reactions, nausea, or migraines in sensitive individuals.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to accommodate requests for specific placement providers, clinic locations, or particular shift times. Placements are allocated strategically across our partner network to ensure appropriate clinical supervision ratios, balanced student distribution, and quality learning experiences for all students.

Important: Please do not contact your allocated clinic directly before your scheduled placement start date. Unsolicited student contact can disrupt clinic workflows, interfere with patient care, and impact the supervision of other students currently on placement. We’ll provide all necessary placement details, including location, contact person, start time, dress code, and parking information, once your placement is confirmed and scheduled.

We strongly encourage all students to make every reasonable effort to attend their allocated placement as scheduled. However, we understand that unexpected circumstances occasionally arise.

Placement rescheduling and absences:

  • If you’re unable to attend an allocated work placement, a rescheduling fee will be charged for each alternative placement arrangement required
  • Placement shifts missed (wholly or partially) without a valid medical certificate will incur a non-attendance fee per alternative shift needed to make up the required clinical hours
  • Medical absences supported by documentation are managed on a case-by-case basis

Additional placements and make-up shifts are scheduled at the sole discretion of the placement provider and are subject to availability—this may result in significant delays to your course completion. For specific fee amounts and to discuss your individual circumstances, refer to the ‘Fees’ section of your relevant course page or contact our team on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au.

Yes, comprehensive work experience insurance cover is provided and fully paid for by LTT for all students undertaking placement with our approved clinical partners. This professional indemnity and personal accident insurance covers you during all placement-related clinical practice activities.

Important coverage limitation: This insurance relates specifically to clinical practice and does not cover your personal belongings, valuables, or electronic devices. Please leave valuable items at home or secure them in your vehicle. We’re unable to assist with claims in the event of theft, damage, or loss of personal property during placement.

Yes, students are responsible for organising and covering all costs associated with their own travel arrangements to attend work placement. This includes public transport fares, fuel costs, parking fees, tolls, and any other transport-related expenses. When planning your budget for the Certificate III in Pathology Collection, factor in daily travel costs for the duration of your placement period. Note your allocated placement location when confirmed so you can arrange appropriate transport and allow adequate travel time to ensure punctual arrival.

A full qualification (such as Certificate III in Pathology Collection HLT37215) is awarded when you successfully complete all required units of competency and any mandatory components like work placement. This nationally recognised credential demonstrates your comprehensive capability and readiness for employment in your chosen field.

A Statement of Attainment is issued if you complete some, but not all, units of competency in your enrolled course. This official document lists the specific units you’ve successfully completed. For example, if work placement is mandatory but you’re unable to complete it due to vaccination requirements, personal circumstances, or other barriers, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment rather than the full qualification. While a Statement of Attainment demonstrates partial completion and skill development, many employers specifically require the full qualification for employment consideration.

Entry requirements vary depending on the specific qualification you’re pursuing. We welcome students from diverse educational and professional backgrounds, including school leavers, career changers, and those seeking to upskill in their current field.

General entry criteria typically include:

  • Minimum age requirements (usually 18 years or older for healthcare courses)

LTT is not currently registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). This means our courses will not fulfil the study requirements of a student visa, and we’re unable to sponsor international students for visa purposes or issue Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) documents required for student visa applications.

If you’re an international student specifically seeking study opportunities in Australia on a student visa, we recommend visiting the official CRICOS website to view the comprehensive list of registered education providers offering courses to overseas students.

However, if you’re already residing in Australia on a different visa type that doesn’t require CRICOS registration—such as a skilled migration visa, partner visa, temporary resident visa, working holiday visa, or permanent residency—you’re absolutely welcome to apply for our courses. Contact our enrolment team on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au to discuss your visa status and eligibility.

Required documentation varies depending on your chosen qualification. Most applicants need to supply:

Essential documents:

  • Certified proof of identity (driver’s licence, passport, or birth certificate)
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) — create one free at gov.au if you don’t have one
  • Evidence of educational prerequisites if required (certificates, academic transcripts)

For pathology collection courses specifically:

  • Tuberculosis screening documentation
  • National Police Check (may be required for some placements)
  • Working with Children Check (if applicable in your state)

Check the ‘Application Requirements’ or ‘How to Apply’ section on your specific course page for the complete documentation checklist. Our enrolment team will guide you through the document gathering process once you begin your application.

Yes, LTT recognises prior learning through two pathways:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): If you’ve gained skills and knowledge through previous work experience, on-the-job training, or life experience, you may be eligible to receive credit without repeating formal training.

Credit Transfer: If you’ve completed equivalent units of competency with another registered training organisation, you may be able to transfer those credits towards your LTT qualification.

Both options can potentially reduce your study time and course fees. Contact our enrolment team on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au to discuss your previous qualifications, work history, and credit transfer options. You’ll need to provide evidence such as certificates, transcripts, position descriptions, or workplace references.

Course duration varies depending on the qualification level, study mode (full-time or part-time), and your individual learning pace. For example, the Certificate III in Pathology Collection typically takes between 6-12 months to complete, including classroom learning, online modules, and mandatory work placement hours.

Specific duration details are provided on each course page. Remember that completion timeframes can be affected by factors such as:

  • How quickly you progress through online eLearning modules
  • Your attendance at scheduled face-to-face training sessions
  • Availability of work placement opportunities
  • Time taken to complete and submit assessments
  • Any interruptions or deferrals

Contact our team on 1300 588 588 for course-specific duration information and to discuss study options that fit your lifestyle.

  • Police checks or Working with Children Checks (if required)

We provide comprehensive cost information during enrolment so you can budget effectively. Check your course page or contact us on 1300 588 588 for a complete breakdown of potential additional costs.

LTT maintains a fair and transparent refund policy that protects both students and the organisation. Refund eligibility depends on the timing of your withdrawal, the reason for cancellation, and whether you’ve commenced training activities.

Generally:

  • Withdrawals before course commencement may be eligible for full or partial refunds (minus administration fees)
  • Withdrawals after commencement typically result in partial refunds based on services already provided
  • Fees for completed training, assessment, or placement activities are non-refundable
  • Special consideration may be given for compassionate circumstances

For complete refund policy details, visit www.ltt.edu.au/policies-student-documents or contact our team on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au to discuss your specific situation.

Life happens, and we understand that sometimes you need to pause your studies. LTT offers deferral options for students experiencing personal circumstances, health issues, financial hardship, or other challenges that temporarily prevent course participation.

Deferral process:

  • Contact our student support team as soon as you know you need to defer
  • Discuss the reason for deferral and expected duration
  • Complete deferral paperwork and have your request assessed
  • Receive confirmation of your deferral period and re-commencement date

Deferral policies vary by course and may be subject to limitations. Some courses have maximum deferral periods, and work placement allocations may be affected by extended breaks. Contact us on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au to discuss deferral options before your circumstances become critical.

Absolutely. Many students have their course fees paid directly by their employer as part of professional development, workforce upskilling, or career pathway programs. We regularly work with healthcare providers, pathology companies, medical centres, and other organisations investing in their staff’s vocational education.

If your employer is paying your fees, we can:

  • Invoice your organisation directly
  • Provide customised reporting on your progress
  • Arrange flexible training schedules around workplace commitments
  • Issue completion certificates to both you and your employer

Contact our team on 1300 588 588 or info@www.ltt.edu.au to arrange employer-sponsored training and discuss invoicing arrangements.

Employment & Career Support

No, there’s no guaranteed job outcome after finishing a qualification with LTT. As a registered training organisation, we’re legally unable to guarantee employment or provide job agency services for graduates.

However, we maximise your employment prospects by:

  • Designing programs in close consultation with industry partners to ensure you’re learning in-demand skills
  • Providing work placement opportunities in real clinical environments where you can demonstrate your capabilities
  • Connecting you with potential employers during placement (many providers recruit directly from their placement student pool)
  • Equipping you with current, industry-relevant knowledge and practical experience

We strongly advise students to treat work placement as an extended job interview—your professionalism, clinical skills, and attitude during placement can directly lead to employment opportunities.

Ultimately, as with all vocational and tertiary education, securing employment after graduation is your responsibility. We refer jobseekers to government and non-government organisations specialising in employment services. Find support options at servicesaustralia.gov.au/looking-for-work-and-job-hunting.

The pathology sector consistently experiences workforce demand across Australia, particularly for qualified specimen collectors. As Australia’s population ages and healthcare needs increase, pathology services continue to expand, creating ongoing employment opportunities for trained professionals.

Typical employment settings include:

  • Private pathology collection centres (like Australian Clinical Labs, Sonic Healthcare, Healius)
  • Hospital pathology departments
  • Medical centres and GP clinics with collection services
  • Mobile collection services
  • Workplace health screening providers

Many of our graduates secure employment with the very providers where they completed their work placement. Your success in obtaining employment depends on factors including your clinical competency, professional conduct during placement, local job market conditions, and your commitment to actively seeking opportunities.

While we can’t guarantee jobs, you can significantly improve your employment prospects through strategic actions during and after your course:

During your course:

  • Treat every class and placement as a professional opportunity
  • Arrive punctually and consistently demonstrate reliability
  • Perfect your clinical skills through deliberate practice
  • Build rapport with placement supervisors and colleagues
  • Ask questions and show enthusiasm for learning
  • Maintain impeccable personal presentation and hygiene
  • Request feedback and act on it constructively
  • Express interest in future opportunities with placement providers

After graduation:

  • Apply directly to pathology providers in your area
  • Network with industry contacts made during placement
  • Keep your CV and cover letter current with your new qualification
  • Access free employment services through Services Australia
  • Consider opportunities in regional areas with higher workforce demand
  • Stay connected with LTT for industry updates and networking opportunities
