Real student review: May Marshall

I came from Philippines with a business administration background. I graduated with a major in banking and payments but worked in a social work job. After moving to Australia, I was looking for a job that would allow me to have a balance between work and family as I have two young kids.

I have been contemplating this lab course at LTT Perth for a few years. Now my youngest is at kindy, I have had the time to commit to studying! It’s the right time for me.

I’ve always liked physics and I don’t mind maths. The MSL40118 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques course was really good. There are bits that are hard, but with the help of the Trainers it’s not too bad. It was a fun experience for me. We had a smaller group which made it a great environment for learning. Working in a laboratory was new for me, the practicals were actually fun and there was nothing to be afraid of.

I’ve now got a job at ALS Geochemistry in Malaga as Senior Laboratory Assistant for carbon/sulphur analysis and chromatography. I actually started the job 3 days before our graduation day. To date, they are training me in the FA-AA, which is the fire assay atomic absorption instrument. I’m really enjoying it, there’s lots of things to learn and remember but physically it is an easy job. I still have the energy to cook food once it get home, clean the house and help kids go to bed. My Trainer, Sahar, said that they are looking to train me as well in ICP-OES or ICP Ms, which is another instrument but more complicated to operate.

My supervisor at ALS has already put me in to MSL50118 Diploma of Laboratory Technology course with LTT too. I’ve already told all my friends to do this course!
