About

This qualification is delivered by LTT Group Pty Ltd (RTO 51621) and builds technical ability in the use of laboratory application software, maintaining and controlling stock, performing chemical tests, and more.

The course is designed to provide in-depth insight into the industry and focuses on promoting methodological competence, preparing students for technical jobs as laboratory personnel, including laboratory technicians, technical assistants, and more.


Duration

Classes are held 2 days a week over 24 weeks. Class times are 9am-4pm on either Mondays and Tuesdays or Thursdays and Fridays (depending on intake) at our Osborne Park training centre. Classes are occasionally held on different days of the week due to public holidays.


Fees

  • $4,200 - fee for service student tuition fee

To secure your place in class, a $500 deposit is payable upon enrolment (cash and EFT facilities are available). This amount is deducted from the total course fee. Fortnightly direct debit payment plans are available to distribute payments of the remaining balance ($3,700) over a 20 week period (10 x fortnightly payments of $370).

Concessions and government support options are currently unavailable for classroom delivery of this qualification. Credit transfers may reduce the course fee payable. Our refund policy can be viewed here.


Assessment

Students are assessed on their performance in practical and written assessments.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfer processes are available for eligible students. Please contact our team on 1300 588 588 to discuss these options further if you believe you may be eligible for RPL or credit transfer (for equivalent units of competency completed previously). A copy of the original transcript must be provided if applying for a credit transfer.

Should you withdraw before completing the course and / or your clinical work placement hours, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units of competency achieved.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the MSL40118 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques, which will carry the Nationally Recognised Training logo.


Requirements

No prior qualifications are required to study the MSL40118 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques. While there are no formal entry requirements for the course, a general interest in mathematics and chemistry is recommended, and basic computer literacy is advantageous.

On the basis of industry recommendation, and to improve employment prospects, students must be at least 15 years old to undertake the qualification.

Students are required to wear closed-in shoes throughout the course, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed during lab work.

As part of the enrolment process, a comprehensive pre-training review is conducted to capture current competencies (including language, literacy and numeracy). This process also aids in identifying individual learning styles and any support services that may be required so that training delivery can be tailored accordingly.

There are 15 total units of competency in this qualification.

5 core units:

  • MSL953003 Receive and prepare samples for testing

10 elective units:

  • MSL904002 Perform standard calibrations

  • MSL913004 Plan and conduct laboratory/field work

  • MSL924004 Use laboratory application software

  • MSL934007 Maintain and control stocks

  • MSL954004 Obtain representative samples in accordance with sampling plan

  • MSL973013 Perform basic tests

  • MSL973014 Prepare working solutions

  • MSL974017 Prepare, standardise and use solutions

  • MSL974019 Perform chemical tests and procedures

  • MSMENV472 Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
